An olfactory forest dream. This is a paradise of deep woods, full of the green richness of Fir Balsam Resin. Fir Balsam resin is my one of my very Favorite scents, and Be-en-foret has brought it out the forest herself to share with us....

This incense comes with an origami package of Paper Birch Bark that can be written on and set a fire when used in ritual, tree magick that burns bright and sweet

Forest Altar is an incense poem to my experience of working and living in a Northern Forest.  Spring, summer and fall I spend hours in the forest gathering medicinal and incense plants.  Even in winter, I harvest frozen resins, poplar buds and cut standing dead wood for the wood stove.   Winter is a white sparkling magickal season in the North.  But, it is what we call in Quebec, "La belle saison" - the beautiful season -when the air in the wild places is so filled with the perfume of thousands of individual plants in their native habit and my hands are so coated with aromatics that I almost swoon, that I have had the most mind expanding, soul fulfilling and healing experiences in my life.  It is these intense fragrant experiences that I try to recreate in my incenses.

During the brief, warm, season in Quebec, I try to harvest balsam fir resin at least three times a week.  Usually, I harvest during the heat of the day, when the resin is most viscous, and being in the cool forest is a real pleasure. I also bring with me an indestructible recorder and some matches and tobacco to use in my harvesting ritual.  Before I begin to harvest, I play the recorder to serenade and connect with the plants and trees, reflecting and echoing the sounds of the forest.  After, I burn the tobacco, inhaling and offering some smoke to the forest as harvesters have done for millenniums in the Americas.

The forest is filled with the innumerable fragrances of conifers, plants, mosses, mushrooms and soil blended together into the great perfume of the forest.  I bath in the healing energy of the vast plant network. The tools I need to harvest Balsam Fir are simple, a collecting cup with a sharp pointed lip to pierce the resin blister and a dull knife to press any recalcitrant resin out of the blister.  I literally harvest drop by drop, there is no other way.  It is a laborious yet meditative work.  Old timers have told me that not so long ago, French Canadian, "Coureur des Bois" (woodsmen; literally "runners in the forest") lived in the forest the entire season and gathering resin.  They would harvest the resin by day and drink fermented maple sap or eat wildcrafted Amanita muscaria mushroom at night.  In Autumn these hearty and merry harvesters would emerge from the woods with gallons and gallons of resin.

There is no question of bringing any "devices" with me to harvest  The ground is wet with mosses and slippery with rocks, my hands become sticky with resin almost immediately.  I often have to push through thick, grasping brush.  I harvest in the mountains, in an area of thousands of uninhabited acres.  My eyes are my GPS.  It helps that there is a logging trail circling the mountain so I can orientate myself with the slope of the mountain, the trail and the sun.  Wandering from tree to tree, like a butterfly, I collect resin.  I don't use a ladder and only collect from blisters reachable from the ground.

I always find unexpected treasures during the harvest: tree mosses, medicinal plants, large chunks of spruce resin, mushrooms for the body and the soul.  And sometimes, not often, it happens, that I turn the corner into the metaphysical background of the world, the light changes, my skin tingles and I encounter the spirits of the forest.  This incense is an ode from the jammy conifer forest that is my church.

Contains:

Wildcrafted Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea) Resin

Wildcrafted Cedar (Thuja occidentalis) Tips

WildcraftedRed Spruce (Picea rubra)  Resin

Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea) infused bark: This bark is naturally infused with resin.  It is caused by a pathological condition that occurs when carpenter ants set up house in the interior of the tree.  The ants create a vast network of tunnels through out the trunk.  The afflicted tree produces a surplus of resin in its bark in order to try to ward of the attack of the ants and other pathogens as it becomes progressively weaker and weaker and eventually dies.  The bark that is left has the aroma properties of both the tree's resin and it's wood.

Tree (Various species) Mosses

Permaculture tobacco (Nicotiana rustica)

Bound with organic, local, honey and rolled in powdered resin infused wood.

Esprit de la Nature – encens ecologique

Very special herb and resin incense blends featuring the fresh scent of natural Fir Balsam Resin.

We are honored to able offer this wonderful line of incense wildcrafted in the fragrant forests of Quebec. These blends are consciously crafted by our friend and renaissance woman of the wilds, Bonnie Kerr, “Be-en-Foret” . The botanicals used are carefully harvested on her land where she stewards Terre a Terre a permaculture farm and eco-learning retreat, completely off the grid.

Most of her blends contain beautiful Fir Balsam resin , which she gathers herself from her beloved woods. It is a rare treat to be able to experience an incense so lovingly made and close to earth.

These are aromatic treasures, with a scent beyond words. Transporting one to a remote and pristine forest.  In the tradition of Earth Church … aromatic excellence and green alchemy.

We know you will be deeply moved by the magick of this fine incense and fall in love with them as we have…
