Notes from the Forest:  This exceptionally torrid summer, I took the habit of rising before dawn to get ready to start work at sunrise in order to gather liquid, gold, fir balsam resin and fragrant wildflowers.  By noon, when it started to get heat stroke hot, I was already in a fugue state having spent hours in the forest gathering and working with the plant spirits.  The early hours and the heat served to deepen my plant trance.  It was easy to melt into the metaphysical background of the forest as I lay down on the mossy floor of a conifer grove drawn to its promise of cool relief.

The fragrances of the conifers filled the air as the resins on their bark softened and melted in the heat running down their trunks in fragrant freshets.  Balsam Fir, Spruce, Cedar and Hemlock whispered together creating a scentsong that opened my lungs and further lightened my spirit.  The lichens hanging from the trees and the moss cushioning my head on the ground smelled a mysterious fragrance of damp earth and decaying leaves which was both comforting and soothing.

I slipped deep into the metaphysical background of the grove's world.  Dead stumps turned into fairy castles.  Soft, hot breezes rustled the nearby poplar leaves announcing the coming and going of the forest spirits. The buzzing of wasps around a tree with an ant colony's aphid farm became a folktale drama with fairies riding on the backs of butterflies.  The original spirits of the grove came out to play as I fell into the dream of Viridis genii.

The evergreen conifer trees are a vital part of the Northern Forest ecosystem. For just as they help us to breathe as plant medicine and give us psychological comfort in dark times in winter, they perform this same function for the northern forest community.  Even in the weak light of winter, the conifers continue to photosynthesize down to -7°C (20°F) providing oxygen to not only animals but energy to the vast mycorrhizal network underground.  The fact that many of the young conifers are not shaded by leaf trees during this time and can collect sunlight more easily than in the warm months means that the community receives an added energy input.  Conifers also speak deeply to the human psyche imparting feelings of calm, protection and joy.  The do the same for the wider forest community.  Their branches cushion the earth and the mycorrhizal network against crushing snow loads and provide food and shelter from the chilling storms to birds and animals.  During warmer times their fragrances serve to clean and purify the air.  At the hottest of times, as the trees transpired, their scentsong molecules actually help create particles clouds that cool the air.

LICHENS

Tree Moss (Pseudevernia consocians)

Usnea spp

Cladonia spp

I have been fascinated by Lichens for years. Lichens are actually two plants intertwined.  The inner core of the organism is a fungus.  The outer shell is an algae.  The two work together, the algae providing photosynthesis for the organism and the fungi providing water and minerals.  Lichens are the lungs of the forest and are bioindicators of air quality. So it is no surprise that they are also planted medicine for sore throat, harsh coughs and tuberculosis.   In the environment, they fill the role of recycling and purifying airborne chemicals into the soil. Signaling their use as plant medicine that purifies the human body as they are highly anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial and anti-viral and antifungal.  The fragrance and energy of lichens is very calming and grounding like the embrace of a loved one. The feeling of serenity their earthiness can impart is astonishing.
